Celtic have blown away teams after the international break, and they have been winning games on a canter. One of the primary reasons for that is the form of their attacking players. Odsonne Edouard has been breathtaking, but another player who has really caught the attention of late is Mohamed Elyounoussi. The Norwegian winger has already grabbed seven goals and five assists in ten games across all competitions.
It was quite clearly a significant coup for the Hoops in the summer as they brought in the former Basel player on a season-long loan from Southampton. His one-year stint with the Saints was underwhelming, but there was no doubting his quality. On the back of terrific performances, many fans would want to see the 25-year-old being signed permanently.
Elyounoussi on moving to Celtic permanently
Recently Elyounoussi was asked about a permanent switch to Parkhead. He said (STV), ”I’m really happy to be here at the moment and we’ll see what’s going to happen in the end. I’m enjoying it. I came here to get more minutes. I have a good manager and good coaching staff around me as well as the players, so I enjoy it at the moment. I came here to score goals and to help the team and win more titles. It’s maybe beyond what I expected.”
The winger was quiet coy with his response, and he hasn’t given away much away on whether he wants to stay at Celtic Park beyond this season. However, there is no doubt that he would love the praise which he is receiving after his recent performances.
Why Celtic need someone like Elyounoussi
Scott Sinclair, who was a mainstay on the left, has quite clearly run his course in Celtic colours. He will likely leave in January or for free next summer. Lewis Morgan is another player who doesn’t seem to have enough ability in his locker to play for the Hoops at the top level. Therefore the Bhoys will require a left-winger for the long term, and someone like Elyounoussi can be an ideal player for them.
The Norwegian is currently in his prime, and he has shown that he can perform even in European competitions as well. He is no stranger to playing in Europe as he has Champions League experience under his belt with Basel.
His price tag could be an issue for the Bhoys as the Saints signed him for £16m. It is highly unlikely that they would look to sell him for cheap next summer. However, given the current market situation, Celtic should look to splash out big money to bring in Elyounoussi if he carries on with his current form.
