Tottenham Hotspur travelled to Merseyside to take on Everton at Goodison Park earlier today hoping to pick up a win on the road. Both sides fought hard in the first half but couldn’t make a breakthrough. Spurs came out a little bit stronger after the half-time break and took the lead via Dele Alli’s clinical finish in the 63rd minute.
Heung-min Son was given his marching orders in the 79th minute for a horror challenge on Andre Gomes which put the North London outfit on the back foot. The Toffees made their numerical advantage count after they managed to score the equaliser in injury-time via Cenk Tosun’s header to claim a point in front of their home supporters. The contest ended with both teams playing out a 1-1 draw on the day.
Let’s take a look at how each Spurs player performed during the contest versus the Toffees.
GK: Paulo Gazzaniga – 6/10
The Argentine custodian made a crucial save to deny Richarlison in the second half. He had a comfortable game at the back but couldn’t do much about Tosun’s header in injury-time.
RB: Serge Aurier – 6/10
The full-back was a decent outlet for the North London giants down the right flank. He made some driving runs out on the wide areas and whipped in some inviting crosses into the Everton penalty box.
CB: Toby Alderweireld – 6/10
The Belgian centre-back was a commanding presence inside his own half as he made some vital clearances to frustrate the Everton attackers throughout the contest. However, he failed to keep a clean sheet in the end, which will disappoint him.
CB: Davinson Sánchez – 5/10
He looked a bit shaky at the back but did enough to frustrate the opposition for major periods of the game. Sanchez almost gifted the Toffees with another goal-scoring chance in the dying embers of the contest when he almost gave away possession inside his own half.
LB: Ben Davies – 6/10
The Spurs captain tried his best to link up play with others going forward. However, his final delivery often let him down.
CM: Moussa Sissoko – 6/10
The Tottenham midfield ace worked his socks off during the game but didn’t show enough quality on the ball.
CM: Tanguy NDombele – 7/10
Pochettino’s summer signing ran the show in the first half as he displayed many signs of promise going forward. However, he was substituted when his energy levels dipped in the second half.
RM: Heung-Min Son – 4/10
The South-Korean international set-up Alli’s goal but was also guilty of putting in a horrendous tackle on Gomes. He got sent off for his actions and let his teammates down for the final few minutes of the clash.
CAM: Christian Eriksen – 4.5/10
The Dane put in another lacklustre display in the opposition half. His passes were often inaccurate while his work-rate was questionable as well.
LM: Dele Alli – 7/10
The English playmaker took his goal well after his mazy run was capped off with a smart finish. His goal almost made the difference today before Tosun spoilt the Spurs party with his injury-time equaliser.
ST: Lucas Moura – 5/10
The Brazilian speedster struggled to make an impact when operating as a centre-forward. He improved a little in the second half but still his performance not good enough to warrant a permanent starting berth in Pochettino’s first XI.
Substitutes:
CM: Giovani Lo Celso – 4/10
He was mostly a spectator after coming off the bench as he didn’t add anything to the game.
CB: Juan Foyth – N/A
He did not have enough time to make an impact.
LM: Ryan Sessegnon – N/A
The former Fulham prospect came on to run the clock down for the visitors.
