According to The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are monitoring the situation of Andre Onana. It is believed that the Lilywhites are ready to make a £35m swoop for the Ajax goalkeeper in their bid to secure a long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris. Onana’s current contract expires in 2022, but he could be lured out of Amsterdam if a club places a bid in the region of £30m to £35m (via the Sun).
Onana’s success at Ajax
Onana is a product of the Samuel Eto’o academy in Cameroon. He was also a part of La Masia academy in Barcelona before moving to Ajax in January 2015. The youngster played with the Ajax second team in his first season in the Netherlands before making his Eredivisie breakthrough during the 2016/17 campaign.
Since then, Onana has become one of the most ever-present figures in the Ajax first-team. The Cameroonian has notched up as many as 159 competitive appearances for Ajax in all competitions. He notably kept 16 clean sheets in the league last term, helping de Joden lift the title.
Onana wasn’t a crucial part of the club’s incredible run in the UEFA Champions League. But, his performances in the Eredivisie has already helped him become the first-choice goalkeeper for the Cameroon national team and announce himself as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in world football.
Is Onana a viable target for Tottenham?
Tottenham Hotspur are in need of reinforcements in the goalkeeping department. Experienced goalkeeper Hugo Lloris’ form has taken a significant dip within the past couple of years. The Frenchman has appeared more fragile than ever and has also struggled with fitness.
As a result, Tottenham are left with only Paulo Gazzaniga as a potential alternative. The Argentine has done well for the most part but is likely to be able to take on the mantle of replacing Lloris for the long-term.
Therefore, the Lilywhites could undoubtedly use some quality in between the sticks by signing Onana in January. It could be an exciting opportunity for the Ajax starlet to play a prominent role in one of the top clubs in Europe, thus increasing his popularity. Meanwhile, competing with the likes of David de Gea and Alisson would surely highlight his true quality.
That being said, Tottenham’s potential move for Onana in January would depend on a lot of things. The Lilywhites may have to sign a replacement for Christian Eriksen if he leaves in the winter transfer window while the club is also in desperate need of at least two new fullbacks. They must address these issues first before investing in a new goalkeeper.
