Liverpool might not be playing their best football yet, but they are finding ways to win games. They will host Genk next in the Champions League group fixtures after making an incredible comeback against Aston Villa in the league. The Reds are currently second in their Champions League Group E. Meanwhile, Genk are still looking for their first win.
All eyes will be at Anfield in a week’s time as Liverpool will take on Manchester City next weekend. Therefore that game could influence some of the team selection against Genk. We already saw Jurgen Klopp play a team without Fabinho against the Villans. The Brazilian was walking a disciplinary tightrope as another yellow card would have seen him get banned. The Champions League holders will go in as the clear favourite for this encounter at Anfield against their Belgian counterparts.
Team News: Joel Matip is currently out with a knee injury. Mohamed Salah had an ankle issue, but he played at the weekend. However, he was substituted early in the second half against Villa probably keeping the injury in mind. Xherdan Shaqiri is also expected to miss out due to calf problem.
Liverpool predicted lineup vs Genk
Formation (4-3-3)
Defence
Alisson Becker will undoubtedly start in goal for the home team. Virgil van Dijk is also a nailed-on starter in defence. Dejan Lovren will be expected to begin the match over Joe Gomez as the other centre back. Klopp might be tempted to rest one of his fullbacks for this tie, and we think that he could give Andy Robertson a breather. James Milner should slot in at left-back.
There could be a temptation to start Gomez over Trent Alexander-Arnold as well, but we think that Liverpool’s attacking play could suffer if they drop both their first-choice fullbacks. So Alexander Arnold should start at right-back.
Midfield
Fabinho should return to the lineup to play in the deepest role in midfield. Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could get the nod to start in midfield in this tie. Chamberlain has been influential in the last few games, and he could be in the reckoning to start at the weekend against Manchester City as well if he goes on to impress again in midweek.
Attack
Mohamed Salah hasn’t been at his best in the last few games and probably playing against Genk could help him build his confidence. He should start as the wide forward on the right. Sadio Mane has taken his game to the next level this year, but he could be rested on Tuesday night. Divock Origi might feature on the left. Roberto Firmino will likely play in his typical false nine role.
