According to a recent report by The Sun, Burnley boss Sean Dyche is said to be mulling over whether or not to sign on-loan midfielder Danny Drinkwater permanently. The Englishman, who was completely out of favour at Chelsea, was loaned out to Turf Moor in the summer, but has only gone on to make one Carabao Cup appearance so far.
After that fixture, he was next seen getting into a brawl outside a Manchester bar, where he was brutally attacked by five men and ended up injuring his ankle. Still recovering from the knock, the Englishman is set to be out of action for another two weeks at least, meaning that his league debut for the Clarets could be delayed further. Speaking to the media, Sean Dyche said that the situation has been sorted and that it was just about the injury.
What Happened To Danny Drinkwater At Chelsea?
The Englishman was signed from Leicester City in the same window in which they signed their star man N’Golo Kante. Although the Frenchman’s career has kicked on beautifully, the Englishman stumbled and fell at the final hurdle. He never really showed enough quality in training and often spent his time on the fringes of the squad. Although he was used sparingly by both Antonio Conte and Maurizio Sarri, his injury-prone nature has never allowed him to showcase his true talent.
When Frank Lampard took over, it became more obvious that the Englishman’s tenure at the Bridge was going to draw to a close. The former Manchester United man was shipped out to Burnley for a short-term loan, which is set to end in January. Over the two years he spent at the club, the Englishman scored just one goal from 23 appearances and never managed to make any sort of positive impact.
Does Signing Danny Drinkwater Actually Bolster This Burnley Squad?
Despite his questionable history, the Englishman does still offer a certain amount of quality in the middle of the park. He is a good passer of the ball, and doesn’t mind tracking back to help out his defenders either. A willing runner, the 29-year-old can pick out some excellent long passes. He could act as the link between Sean Dyche’s lines if given the right kind of training.
Does Danny Drinkwater Have A Future At Chelsea?
Chelsea currently boast one of the strongest midfields in the entire league, if all their players are fully match-fit. Mason Mount, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic have all been extremely effective for the Blues this season, and with Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley yet to return from injury, Frank Lampard is spoilt for choice in that area. The likelihood of Danny Drinkwater getting a game amidst all the quality is extremely bleak, meaning that if Sean Dyche doesn’t extend his loan deal, the Englishman may have to look at other options.
