According to a recent report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Manchester United are said to be interested in signing Inter Milan’s Argentine talisman Lautaro Martinez in January. The report claims that the Serie A giants will be looking to get around €111m for the player – four times what they paid for him in 2018. Although Barcelona are also said to be interested, if United pay the price in the winter, Inter could sell.
What Has Lautaro Martinez Achieved At Inter?
The Argentine striker was signed from Racing Club, where he made his way up through the ranks. Despite being just 22, he consistently posts excellent numbers, and he’s scored 16 goals since joining Inter Milan in the summer of 2018. This season alone, the youngster has five goals and two assists from ten Serie A games, and he’s even popped up with a couple of important goals in the Champions League.
He is a now a regular in Antonio Conte’s trademark 3-5-2 setup at the San Siro, as he often works with Romelu Lukaku at the head of their attack. While the Belgian is responsible for winning second balls and making runs in behind, Lautaro can run at defenders and finish with aplomb in the box. Losing him would be a pretty big blow for Inter fans, who have recognised the sheer quality that he brings to the side.
What Would Manchester United Be Getting In Lautaro Martinez?
The youngster is a tireless worker who is willing to run the channels all day long. Despite being rather diminutive in stature, he can be blisteringly quick on the ball and deceptively strong as well. He has the attributes to complement what the likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial bring to the team. His movement can be a nightmare for the opposition defenders to deal with, making him the ideal choice for a Premier League club.
He tends to be a deadly finisher inside the box, meaning Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would be getting precisely what he’s missing in his team – a goalscorer. He also has the versatility to play on the flanks or even in behind the top striker, meaning that the likes of Marcus Rashford could flourish playing alongside the energetic Argentine.
Should Manchester United Go For Lautaro Martinez?
Manchester United’s struggles in front of goal this season have been quite apparent to see. They’ve scored just 13 goals in 10 league fixtures so far, so much so that teams like Burnley and Aston Villa have managed to out-score them. Lautaro would be a solid addition to Ole’s project at Old Trafford, but the mammoth price tag that Inter Milan have set could be an issue.
