Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United faced off in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, and although the fixture was played out at Stamford Bridge, it was United who drew the last punch, through a delightful Marcus Rashford free-kick. The fixture ended 2-1, with Belgian star Michy Batshuayi scoring the Blues’ only goal on the night, with an effort that showcased all his brilliant attributes in play.
According to Chelsea’s official website, Frank Lampard was full of praise for striker Michy Batshuayi on the back of a disappointing defeat to United. Although the manager expressed his disappointment in the fact that they weren’t able to win on the night, he went on to say that Batshuayi had been really good for the Blues so far this season. He also said that every time the Belgian has come onto the pitch, he’s given them something extra in the attack.
How Has Michy Batshuayi’s Season Gone So Far?
The Belgian international is yet to start a league game for the Pensioners but has made five appearances off the bench already in this campaign. He’s even picked up a league goal along the way, scoring in the Blues comfortable win against Southampton earlier in the season. He’s been the second choice striker, behind Tammy Abraham, and he’s done well whenever the opportunities have presented themselves.
Now ahead of last season’s Europa League top scorer Olivier Giroud on the depth charts, Batshuayi scored a crucial goal for the Blues on their trip to Amsterdam as well. Chelsea beat last season’s semifinalist Ajax by a 1-0 scoreline, thanks to a late winner by the Belgian. He seems to be forming a good partnership with former Borussia Dortmund teammate Christian Pulisic as well, triggering the start of a potentially fruitful relationship for the Blues.
What Warranted Frank Lampard’s Praise?
The striker highlighted all of his strongest attributes to score the goal against Manchester United, as the move began with a goal kick from Willy Caballero. The Belgian picked up the ball at halfway and outmuscled Harry Maguire, but managed to stay off his feet. He then used his technicality and sheer pace to beat Marcos Rojo as well. Showing a striker’s edge, the Belgian never even had to look up, as he placed the ball into the bottom corner, past a helpless Sergio Romero.
As Lampard said, the striker is a player who will work extremely hard for the team, even if everything isn’t going his way. He understands what it means to put on the royal blue kit and just how lucky he has been to get to this position. The best part about it is that he doesn’t seem to mind that Abraham is the number one, as he’s waited patiently for opportunities so far this term, only to then take them with great aplomb.
What Does The Future Hold For Michy Batshuayi?
Whether or not he’ll be there, in the long run, is a question that’s up in the air. But, what can be said with confidence is that he will have a massive part to play for the Blues this season. Batshuayi scored the goal that won Antonio Conte the league title in his first year in charge, a few years ago. He’s scored some important goals for the club, and the Chelsea support appreciates and cherishes his presence at the football club. As things stand, Batshuayi isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon.
