According to ESPN journalist, David Faitelson, Manchester City have rejected a €9.8m bid from Chivas for the services of Uriel Antuna. The Mexican winger, who is currently playing for LA Galaxy, on loan from City has impressed the onlookers with his performances in the MLS. As a result, Mexican club Chivas have made a €9.8m offer, which was immediately rebuffed by City, who are apparently asking for a higher price.
Antuna’s success in the MLS
Antuna has been a part of Manchester City since 2017 when he joined from Mexican club Santos. After the end of an 18-month loan spell at Groningen in December 2018, he was sent out to LA Galaxy earlier this year. And the youngster has proved quite effective as well upon his return to North America.
In 31 matches in the MLS this season, Antuna has netted six goals. He also has six assists to his name, becoming LA Galaxy’s creator-in-chief. His contributions in the final third have helped the club create more chances for star man Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has netted 30 goals this season. It also helped them finish fifth in the Eastern conference, though they were ultimately knocked out by arch-rivals LAFC in the playoffs.
Furthermore, Antuna has become a regular fixture in the Mexican national team, having already netted four goals in eight international appearances.
What is so special about Antuna?
Antuna is an explosive winger, who is blessed with blistering pace that makes him a scourge for the defenders on the counter. He loves to take on players and get to the byline to provide dangerous crosses into the box. His quick-feet and speed means he can swiftly use a burst of pace to get past the opposing defender.
Moreover, Antuna has a knack for being a snapshooter, which is why he can not only create chances but can also score goals. Hence, the 22-year-old is quite a well-rounded attacker.
Does Antuna have a future at Manchester City?
Despite his performances in the MLS, it’s unlikely Antuna will be able to make an impression in the Manchester City first-team. The Sky Blues already have a strong squad, where even top talents like Phil Foden fail to get regular opportunities.
From the player’s perspective, a move away from the Etihad makes complete sense. But, he should at least try to use his fiery form in the MLS to seal a move to a European club if he wants to make a mark at the highest level.
As far as Chivas are concerned, they are one of the top teams in Mexico and Man City have every right to ask for a higher fee for their prized asset.
