Alan Shearer has recently made an extravagant claim that Sergio Aguero is the only world class player in the Premier League. While being the only world class player in the League is a perhaps inaccurate, the claims of Sergio Aguero being world class are thoroughly justified. The Argentine has been a player who has been performing at the club level for over 10 years now, scoring goals aplenty. Let’s take a look at why Aguero is considered to be one of the best in the business.
Finishing
A striker is always judged by the number of goals he scores and Aguero is a type of player who has always been in contention of topping the scoring charts of the leagues he has played in. The 28-year old is a natural finisher and his trademark is the ability of his remarkably accurate 2nd post finishes.
He displays brilliant technique and top notch execution inside the penalty box and with a total of 273 goals scored in 511 career appearances so far, Sergio Aguero is one of the best finishers in world football.
Movement
A particular characteristic of an influential forward is his off the ball movement. Aguero is very sharp in that area. Varying his pace to create the yard of space needed, the striker shows his predatory instincts by finding himself in the right positions to apply the finishing touches when a delivery is sent inside the penalty area.
The striker’s movement is very well understood in the situations when he drags his marker out of his zone, a thing which he used to do with greater frequency while at Atletico Madrid, while partnering and learning a lot from his fellow forward, who was considered to be one the most intelligent players of his time in Diego Forlan.
Versatility
The Argentine can play both as the lone front man, a secondary striker and as the wide forward on both the flanks. During his time at the Vicente Calderon, the 28-year old played as the secondary striker alongside Diego Forlan and for his national team, he was also deployed as the wide forward with Gonzalo Higuaín stationed as the centre forward.
Aguero’s ability to dribble his way out under pressure serves him well in those situations, there were many instances also of the forward drifting out wide and then suddenly come back inside to score some blinders running with the ball at defenders leaving them in their wake.
The ability of the forward to play at different positions also allows for a greater tactical flexibility and increases his value even further within the squad.
Fear Factor
It doesn’t matter if you are 6ft tall or above, if you are a defender you will be worried about facing the 5ft 8in Sergio Aguero. It is really as simple as that. A player very difficult to nudge off the ball due to his short but powerful build and a low centre of gravity with the magnetic ball control is what has allowed Aguero to terrorise defenders for some time now.
The scariest part is that he almost every time makes it count. Just as his record suggests, since his arrival in the Premier league, the forward has scored 109 goals in 158 games which equate to more than a goal every two games. Most impressively, despite his injury record which forces him to spend time on the sidelines, whenever he returns to the field he seems to have never lost his touch and keeps on banging in the goals.
In all, Sergio Aguero is the one player who ticks all the boxes when it comes to determining a world class forward. His remarkable consistency and efficiency in front of goal make him a player unique to the Premier League and in his 6th season at the Etihad, he is already regarded as the most skilful and finest ever forward to ever play for the side by many.
