According to a recent report by The Sun, Premier League giants Chelsea are said to have been piqued by the potential of signing English striker Callum Wilson from Bournemouth. It has been suggested that the Blues are confident about their transfer ban being lifted before the winter window ends and that they’ve already begun planning the moves they’re going to make, once the market becomes available to them.
The 27-year-old England international was called up by Gareth Southgate for the Three Lions’ recent Euro Qualifying fixtures and even came on to replace star man Harry Kane in their second outing against Bulgaria. Eventual 6-0 winners on the night, the striker was preferred as a substitute to Chelsea man Tammy Abraham, as the youngster still awaits his national debut.
How Did Callum Wilson Reach The Premier League?
Like many successful players in the past, including the likes of Craig Bellamy, John Fleck and Leicester City star James Maddison, the Coventry City youth setup has produced some of England’s most celebrated footballers over the years. Callum Wilson was also a member of this renowned academy and made a name for himself during the 13/14 League 1 campaign.
Playing for the club, the veteran striker has notched up an impressive return of 21 goals from 37 League 1 appearances, which is what triggered the Bournemouth chiefs to move for him in the first place. Since making the switch though, there’s been no stopping the striker. He has consistently scored goals in the Premier League when given the right kind of opportunities.
What Does Callum Wilson Bring To The Table?
A direct and robust player, he would fall into a category of strikers that is only available at a premium in world football today. He has the strength and physicality to challenge most defenders and is undoubtedly one of the deadliest finishers in the Premier League. His goal-scoring rate for Bournemouth last season had been exhilarating, and this term, he has five goals and an assist from 10 games as well.
A striker who will work tirelessly for a cause, he has the will and determination to deliver on even the biggest stages. More than capable of the odd worldie, the Englishman is still only 27 and has a lot left in his tank to offer. His biggest selling point, obviously, is his ability to finish inside the box. Adept at finding shooting opportunities in the final third, he is also an outstanding team player, who will work for the badge, irrespective of the situation at hand.
Why Chelsea Should Move For Callum Wilson
The Blues had been fairly dependant on Eden Hazard to produce all the goals up until last season. With the Belgian now gone, the responsibility has fallen onto the heads of a bunch of young English stars. The addition of Callum Wilson would be a massive boost for Lampard, who could easily bank on the striker’s experience and footballing know-how to deliver for the Blues.
