According to a recent report by the Daily Mail, Premier League high-flyers Leicester City are said to be eyeing up a move for Celtic’s Norwegian international centre-half Kristoffer Ajer.
The youngster, who has been at the club since he signed from Norwegian outfit Start in 2016, is still only 21 but has been impressing quite a bit. It has been suggested that Brendan Rodgers is keen on signing Ajer as a replacement for the now departed Harry Maguire and the ageing Wes Morgan.
How Did Kristoffer Ajer Make A Name For Himself?
Having begun his playing career at Norwegian club Lillestrom, the youngster was identified as a potential talent by the scouts at Celtic, before he was signed on a permanent deal from Start in 2016. After making his transfer, the youngster endured a difficult first few months and was eventually loaned out to Scottish giants Kilmarnock.
The few months he spent at Kilmarnock turned out to be extremely vital to his development, as he played in 17 fixtures during his short spell there. After returning to Celtic, Brendan Rodgers gave the youngster a chance to line up in the starting eleven.
Now a regular in the Celts’ starting lineup, the youngster has already played in 8 Premiership matches this season. He has picked up an assist and a goal as well.
What Would Kristoffer Ajer Add To The Foxes’ Defence?
The Norwegian is a rather versatile defender, who can operate down the middle, on either flank or even as a defensive midfielder. His passing and movement from the back make the lives of players like Scott Brown in the Celtic midfield, easier. He boasts a remarkably composed head and never dives into challenges.
He tends to time his tackles supremely well and has enough pace to get back and cover during counter-attacks. Having played under Rodgers during the manager’s Celtic days, Ajer would have the upper-hand in settling down fast in England as the coach already knows his play-style. Ajer really has the ideal skill-set to flourish in the Premier League.
Will Kristoffer Ajer Be A Good Signing For The Foxes?
The Foxes asserted their dominance over fellow Premier League side Southampton by destroying them by a 9-0 scoreline at the St.Mary’s Stadium recently. With such an exciting attacking performance being put up by Rodgers’ men, the former Liverpool manager will be eager to strengthen his defensive core as well.
The departure of Maguire came as a pretty big blow to Leicester, while 36-year-old Wes Morgan, certainly isn’t getting any younger. Kristoffer Ajer seems to be of the perfect age and mould to excel at the King Power Stadium, and the Foxes should do everything in their power to bring the Norwegian to the Midlands this term.
