According to the reports from the Scotsman, Manchester United are looking to make a move for Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer. Ole Gunnar Solskjær is said to be eyeing a ‘glut of’ players from his country and Ajer’s name also seems to be on the list.
Lennon indicates how much Ajer could cost
This is not the first time that the Hoops are seeing interest for Ajer. Even in the summer, the Norwegian defender was linked with a £15m move to Leicester City and AC Milan. Lennon responded to those rumours in August by saying, ”£15million? I’d value Kris a lot higher than that. He has more to come, and I don’t think £15m would cut it, not that we are entertaining any offers. There’s been no contact from Milan.”
It remains to be seen now what kind of bid Manchester United would put in if they are keen on getting Ajer in January. The centre back has emerged as a crucial player for the Hoops, and he has really managed to cement his place under Lennon.
With Jozo Simunovic being out with a long term injury, we don’t see Lennon sanctioning a move for Ajer in January. Celtic were already struggling at the back with a lot of injuries earlier, and we don’t see the Hoops looking to ship players away even for lucrative offers.
Ajer showcased his versatility this season by playing at right back at the beginning of the season. The 21-year-old started his career as a midfielder, and he was seen as a defensive midfielder when he arrived at Celtic in 2016. However, given his physical strength and height, he easily slotted in at the centre back role.
Why might United be unlikely to go after Ajer in January?
United meanwhile had spent most of their transfer budget in the summer on signing Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissakka. We don’t see them pushing for a move for a defender in January again. Their major problem so far this season has been creating and scoring goals so we think that Celtic should be safe as the Manchester giants have bigger fish to fry. However, a future move cannot be counted out as Ajer has shown from time to time that he can play and thrive at the toughest of levels.
The Norwegian has suffered a bit of loss in form in the past few weeks, but he is still just 21. Also, he has a high ceiling in terms of potential. Ajer is at ease with the ball at his feet and his versatility to play in various roles is also an asset. He might not be at Parkhead for long given his talent, but Lennon should be able to keep him for this season atleast.
