According to the reports from Lancs Live, Manchester United are said to be interested in signing Celtic’s talismanic striker Odsonne Edouard. The Frenchman has attracted plenty of interest of late in the transfer market and not too long ago; he was watched by the representatives of Lazio, AS Roma, Lyon, Dortmund and Napoli when he bagged a hat-trick for France’s u-21 side. Now Manchester heavyweights have also seemingly joined the race for him.
Lennon’s stance on Edouard
Even with all the significant interest, Lennon had made his position clear on Edouard’s sale in January. The Celtic boss had recently said, ”There’s no chance of him leaving in January, absolutely not. We’ve got too much to do here. He is a class player and is pivotal to us. We may or may not be in Europe after January, so that’s even more reason for him not to go.”
Not too long ago, Celtic legend Chris Sutton went on to say that the Hoops cannot afford to let him go even for £50m in January. The Northern Irish boss is particularly short of quality options upfront, and even with all the big clubs interested, Celtic are unlikely to sell the striker for any price.
Edouard has often claimed that he is currently happy at Celtic. However, things can change for Lennon if the striker starts to push for a move away. With a close title battle on Celtic’s hands, we think that the Hoops should be able to keep him in January given his importance in the first team.
Why can the Edouard transfer not be counted out?
However, funnier things have happened in the past and Celtic sold Moussa Dembele on the last day of the summer window when he was a talismanic figure at Parkhead in 2018. Then Brendan Rodgers went on to depart from the club midway and even this summer, boyhood Celtic man Kieran Tierney went on to leave for the Premier League. Therefore one cannot count it out if a sizeable offer is placed by the likes of Manchester United or any of the top clubs interested in him.
Leigh Griffiths and Vakoun Issouf Bayo haven’t looked like strikers they can rely upon this season. Edouard has already bagged ten goals and six assists in all competitions so far. His strength and ability to go on marauding runs along with linking up play makes him as an indispensable player in Lennon’s roster right now.
The 21-year-old can do everything which his manager would need from a striker. Lennon would be a worried man, and he needs to brace himself for significant interest for the Frenchman in January.
