As reported by Football Insider, Paul Robinson thinks Tyrone Mings could be an ideal replacement for either Toby Alderweireld or Jan Vertonghen. When asked which centre-back Tottenham should target, the ex-Spurs goalkeeper replied, “I like Tyrone Mings at Aston Villa, I think he’s been outstanding. I think the way he’s been given his England debut this week is no coincidence to his performances.”
But, is he really a viable target for the Lilywhites?
Mings’ success at Aston Villa?
Mings was regarded as one of the top talents in the English lower leagues when he secured a move to Bournemouth in 2015. But, the defender, then a left-back, never really managed to make an impact on the first-team. He made only 23 competitive appearances for the Cherries.
However, a loan move to Aston Villa earlier this year became the turning point of his career. The 26-year-old made 15 league appearances with the Villans, in the Championship. He built a formidable defensive partnership with Axel Tuanzebe that helped the club secure promotion to the top flight.
As a result, Villa chose to retain the services of Mings by paying a total of €22.3 million. And the ex-Ipswich star has continued his bright form this season. Despite Villa’s stuttering start to the campaign, the defender was notably rewarded with a call-up to the English national team this month.
Is Mings a viable target for Tottenham?
Mings has impressed the onlookers with his work-rate at the back. He is capable of stopping the attackers in their tracks with his tackles while his 1.95m frame gives him a considerable advantage in the air. The 26-year-old has notably won 3 headed duels per game so far this season. Meanwhile, his tally of 7.5 clearances per game is indicative of his dogged nature in defence.
However, Mings is not the sharpest when it comes to ball distribution. The defender has attained a pass completion rate of only 76%, which though acceptable for a club like Aston Villa who play with minimal possession, lays fear that he may turn into another Davinson Sanchez.
Another key reason why Spurs should not consider making a move for Mings is his price-tag. Although he is likely to cost significantly lower than the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly, being an Englishman would skyrocket his asking fee. And especially when there are better alternatives around, it’s perhaps wiser for Spurs to look past Mings.
Milan Skriniar, for one, may not be a bad option along with Caglar Soyuncu as both of them are adept in the build-up play as well – just like Vertonghen or Alderweireld.
