It seems Norwich City have maintained their interest in Bayern Munich’s Kwasi Okyere-Wriedt. The Canaries were reportedly linked with him during the summer transfer window, but a move didn’t materialise. However, the question stands on whether or not the Premier League outfit should make a move for the striker in the upcoming January transfer window.
Okyere Wriedt’s success and problems at Bayern
Okyere Wriedt, by all means, is a late bloomer, who is still playing in the lower leagues at the age of 25. He was a product of an SC Hamm youth academy, where he used to play for since the age of five before moving to Concordia Hamburg.
Wriedt joined FC St. Pauli in 2009 and started to impress the onlookers with his blazing performances in the youth leagues. However, he was never promoted to the St. Pauli first team. Instead, it was VfL Osnabruck in 2016, who offered him the opportunity of playing senior football.
The striker didn’t disappoint either, scoring 12 goals in his maiden 3.Liga campaign. As a result, he moved to Bayern Munich reserves in 2017. And since then, the Ghanaian has been in incredible form, notably netting 55 goals in just 74 matches, eight of which have come in the 3.Liga this season.
That being said, Wriedt has been unlucky with the lack of chances in the Bayern first-team, mainly due to the presence of Robert Lewandowski. So far, the forward has made only two competitive appearances for the senior side, both of which came during the 2017/18 campaign.
Should Norwich make a January move for Okyere-Wriedt?
It’s unlikely Okyere-Wriedt will play a prominent role in the Bayern side anytime soon, especially with new signing Jann Fiete Arp lined up as a potential successor of Lewandowski. Therefore, a move away from Bavaria makes sense.
Norwich City, to that end, might not be a bad destination. The Canaries are influenced by German coach Daniel Farke and boast the services of a host of ex-Bundesliga players. That means it will make things easier for him to integrate, at least in terms of communication.
Besides, Wriedt has the scope of becoming a vital member of the Norwich City attack, especially if Teemu Pukki leaves the club in January.
Speaking of Norwich, Wriedt’s goalscoring prowess could help revitalise their attacking department, although it remains to be seen whether or not the Ghanaian manages to replicate his performances in the Premier League.
