Newcastle United have been monitoring the situation of Hull City winger Jarrod Bowen for quite some time, and they were even linked with him during the summer transfer window. The Magpies remain interested in the English winger and latest reports from the Chronicle suggest that even Bowen is open to a move to Newcastle.
However, it is not yet clear whether United would look to spend £20m for him in January. Bowen is currently in the final year of his contract, but Hull City have an option of triggering a year-long extension. Reports have also emerged that they are trying to tie him down to a new deal.
Bowen has started his season well as he has five goals and two assists to his name so far. The English winger has emerged as a integral player for the Tigers over the past few seasons, even though they have struggled as a team in the Championship. Bowen earned a place in previous year Championship’s team of the season as he managed to score 22 goals in 46 appearances.
Why Bruce need someone like Bowen?
Allan Saint-Maximin, Christian Atsu and Miguel Almiron are currently the wing options at Steve Bruce’s disposal. However, Almiron is more suited to play in the central areas as a secondary striker and given an opportunity; he would likely play in that position. Bowen is a right-winger, and he will slot in well on the flanks at St. James’ Park.
Matt Ritchie is also an option, but he has been predominantly used as a wing-back in the last few months. Therefore the signing of Bowen makes sense as it would allow Almiron to play in his preferred role as well.

It is understandable why Newcastle United might want to wait on him as his contract situation is still up in the air. If Hull City aren’t able to get him on a new deal, then they will most likely trigger a year-long extension. In that case, the Magpies will probably have to pay the mentioned price; otherwise, they might have to wait for more than a year to see him run down his contract. Hence, we think that the Tyneside outfit should look to pay £20m for him in January.
Newcastle need more goal-scorers in their squad, and Bowen is someone who can fill in that role. He is not a regular winger who hugs the byline, but he often likes to come inside into the central areas playing as an inverted winger down the right.
