As reported by Daily Mail, Jorginho’s agent, Joao Santos has refused to rule out a Serie A return for his agent. The Chelsea midfielder is currently enjoying a bright spell under Frank Lampard. But, his potential departure from Stamford Bridge could serve as a massive blow for the Blues.
“In football everything is possible, the desire to return [to Italy] is always there,’ Santos told Radio Sportiva.
Jorginho’s struggles under Maurizio Sarri
Jorginho arrived at Chelsea last summer, in a €57 million move from Napoli. He was brought in by the previous manager Maurizio Sarri, who knew him quite well during their time together at Naples.
The Italian international started the campaign pretty well, playing a pivotal role in Sarri’s possession-based football. But, the Blues began to drift away from form and struggled with consistency. Jorginho pretty much became the scapegoat for Chelsea in midfield.
The fans were irked by the fact that Sarri utilised the ex-Napoli star in the defensive midfield role instead of N’Golo Kante. The Frenchman, in contrast, had to occupy a more advanced slot in midfield, where he had to do his attacking chores.
As for Jorginho, he did struggle at times, mainly due to the pressure exerted by the Chelsea fans as well as the notorious management style of Sarri himself. As a result, the midfielder ended the campaign as one of the least favourite players in the Chelsea camp.
Jorginho’s resurgence under Lampard
Sarri’s departure served as a blessing for Jorginho, who has become the permanent number one defensive midfielder for Chelsea. The Italian international has flourished under the leadership of Lampard, who, being a midfielder himself, has recognised his quality brilliantly.
Jorginho’s ability to dictate the tempo of the game coupled with his accurate long balls has made him a midfield lynchpin for Chelsea. And while he was mainly overshadowed by Kante, the injury to the Frenchman earlier this season, has highlighted the efforts put in Jorginho.
Why should Chelsea keep hold of Jorginho?
Chelsea are in no danger of losing Jorginho anytime soon. But, the Blues need to keep hold of the 27-year-old for the foreseeable future if they are to assert any sort of identity in the near future.
Indeed, Jorginho’s composure and skill in the middle of the park could be vital for the Premier League giants. It’s also fair to point out that the Blues don’t have any potential alternatives either, having already got rid of Tiemoue Bakayoko while Danny Drinkwater clearly doesn’t have a future at Stamford Bridge.
