According to Le10Sport, as cited by Sportsmole, Tottenham Hotspur have been offered the chance to sign Adrien Rabiot if they let go of Christian Eriksen to Juventus. The Italian giants are keen to sign the Dane, who has been linked with a move away from north London. However, the Lilywhites have refused this mega swap deal. Was it the right move by the club, though?
What will Spurs lose with Eriksen?
Eriksen has been one of the most consistent players in the Premier League ever since he joined from Ajax many years ago. The playmaker is the creator-in-chief for Spurs, and his adaptability and versatility have made him one of the best players in Europe.
Indeed, Eriksen has been an enormous asset for Mauricio Pochettino as he can cover several roles, including the central midfield slot. His telepathic combination with the likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min has been vital to Tottenham’s rapid rise to prominence in recent years.
Not to mention, the Dane is quite effective from set-pieces as well. And this bodes rather well for a Spurs side, that boasts the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertongthen and even Davinson Sanchez as well as marksman Kane.
Aside from his chance creation, Eriksen’s presence in midfield has enhanced Spurs’ ball-retention and has them much more effective during possession-phases. Hence, his departure would serve as a massive blow for the Premier League giants, especially in the time of a crisis.
What will Rabiot add to the table?
Rabiot may not exactly be useful to Pochettino given the fact that the Argentine already has a strong central midfield unit. Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko are gradually improving while they also signed Tanguy Ndombele from Olympique Lyon in the summer. It’s also fair to point out that Giovani Lo Celso will return from injury as well.
Therefore, the addition of another central midfielder is redundant for Spurs at the moment. So they are definitely in the right to decline Juventus’ swap deal. But, the Lilywhites should try to include Paula Dybala in the deal as the Argentine superstar has the quality as well as the experience to replace Eriksen in the number ten slot.
The ex-Palermo sensation has also struggled at Juventus, but it’s unlikely he would want to join Tottenham given their current situation. Besides, his hefty wage demands are likely to cause a problem or two for the PL giants.
