According to the latest reports from Turkey as cited by the Scotsman, Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has emerged as a surprise managerial candidate for Turkish heavyweights Besiktas. Ahmet Nur Cebi could be the next president of the Turkish heavyweights, and he is said to be keen on landing Gerrard.
Gerrard’s name arrived on the scene when BeIN Sports Turkey journalist Mehmet Demirkol recently said, ”I heard one of the strong candidates (for club’s president), Ahmet Nur Cebi, has a different name in his mind. Steven Gerrard’s name is being discussed.”
Recently rumours had also emerged that Leeds United could eye a move for the Ibrox boss as a potential replacement for Marcelo Bielsa in the future. Even during the summer transfer window, the Liverpool legend was linked with a move to Newcastle United.
With all the mentioned interest, Rangers should probably feel lucky to have an icon like Gerrard at the club. As things stand, there is no way that the English manager would leave midway through the season given that we are in for a tight title race this season.
Why the club faithful don’t need to worry?
Gerrard was known for his loyalty during his playing days as he had a chance to leave Liverpool for some of the giants of club football, but the midfielder stayed put at his boyhood club. There is a sense of inevitability that Gerrard will leave Rangers only for Liverpool in the future. However, Besiktas are no Liverpool, and the Reds currently have a boss in Jurgen Klopp who will definitely stay on for a few more years.
Hence, Rangers fans should take this latest news with a pinch of salt and maybe the lack of news during international break has linked up the name of Gerrard to Besiktas. The English manager has made Rangers a force to reckon with in the Premiership, and they have even made it back to back Europa League main draws under him. Moreover, Gerrard’s attraction has allowed them to sign certain players who might have been tough for Rangers to lure in normal circumstances.
The Gers faithful will now hope that the manager will deliver the title and trophies which Rangers desperately need after seeing Celtic dominate the Scottish football scene for years. The Gers have already shown that they can match the Hoops this season as they are sitting on the top of the table with a two-point lead.
