According to a recent report by Goal.com, Manchester United are plotting a move to secure the signature of West Ham United midfield ace Declan Rice when the transfer window reopens in January. The same source has also mentioned that the Hammers rising star is on the top of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s transfer wish-list for this winter transfer period.
Declan Rice’s Rich Vein Of Form In The Premier League
The London-born prospect has slowly but surely established himself as a regular first-team starter at the London Stadium. He was exceptional for Manuel Pellegrini’s side last season when he operated as a defensive midfielder.
West Ham have continued to play Rice in a defensive role in midfield as he is one of the best tacklers in English football. He has excelled in that position and has continued with his rich vein of form in this campaign. The 20-year-old has featured in eight matches for the Hammers in the Premier League, making an average of 3.8 tackles, 2.3 interceptions and 0.6 clearances per game (stats via whoscored).
The former Chelsea youth player has also secured five international caps for England thus far and is expected to play a vital role for the Three Lions in the coming years. Rice is primarily a holding midfielder but can also play as a centre-back if required.
What Does The English Midfielder Add To Pellegrini’s Team?
Rice can read the game well and can cover a lot of ground at the centre of the park. He is a reliable presence in midfield and can make some timely interceptions for his side. However, the English sensation needs to work on his creative attributes if he wants to prove his worth at an elite club someday.
Why Pellegrini Should Not Allow Rice To Leave In January
Pellegrini’s primary concern, for now, should be to retain Rice’s services at least until the end of the season. West Ham will find it increasingly difficult to find a suitable replacement for the English talent during the January transfer window. Rice is exceptional in breaking down the rhythm of the opposition, so there are not too many players like him.
Hence, the Hammers would be better off keeping him at East London for as long as possible. They should only consider letting him go when they can lineup a perfect replacement for him which will be easier said than done.
