According to Don Balon, as cited by FOX Sports, Real Madrid are leading FC Barcelona in the pursuit of Fabian Ruiz. The Napoli midfielder has been identified as a top target for both the Spanish giants. But, it is Madrid who are in pole position to sign Ruiz, who is valued at around €80m (via FOX Sports).
Fabian Ruiz’s success in Serie A
A product of the Real Betis youth academy, Ruiz initially made a mark in the La Liga with Betis during the 2017/18 campaign before joining Napoli for a fee of €30m. And he has never had to look back since then.
Indeed, Ruiz enjoyed a stunning debut campaign in the Serie A, making 27 league appearances with Napoli. He scored five goals and provided three assists for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
The 23-year-old built a solid midfield partnership with Allan, helping Napoli plug the gap in the middle, following the departure of Jorginho. He also helped the Partenopei put up a strong title challenge for Juventus, even though they missed out on the title by 11 points last season.
Ruiz has once again been a key component of the Napoli’s senior team this season, featuring in five league games and registering one assist so far.
What can he bring to the table?
Ruiz is advertised as an all-round central midfielder, who can influence the game on both ends of the pitch. As you would expect from any Spaniard, the 23-year-old is known for his technical quality as well as the ability to distribute possession.
Moreover, the ex-Real Betis star can act as a ball-carrier as well, easing his team’s transition and fabricating scoring opportunities in the final third. He also has an imposing 1.89m figure that gives him a considerable advantage when it comes to aerial duels.
Where does Ruiz fit in at Real Madrid?
Real Madrid have quite a stacked midfield department. But, Toni Kroos has struggled with consistency over the past 12 months while Luka Modric is gradually declining.
Federico Valverde has shown some promise. But, the Uruguayan has very little experience in European football. And that’s where Ruiz could come into the fray.
The Napoli star can be an ideal long-term replacement for the ageing Modric. And given his style of play, he can also compete with Kroos, should Zinedine Zidane opt to sign another central midfielder next summer. The fact that Ruiz is still 23-year-old makes him a smart long-term investment for Los Blancos.
