After a promising spell under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer earlier this year, Manchester United have stuttered a bit in this new campaign. It is mainly due to the fact that the Red Devils are yet to complete a major overhaul, having signed just three new players this summer.
But, if they want to recruit new players, they will have to make way for them by getting rid of their unwanted stars. In this article, we will talk about three players United must sell in the upcoming January transfer window.
Marcos Rojo
Marcos Rojo has endured a miserable spell at Manchester United since joining the club in 2014. The Argentine international has struggled with injuries and has failed to find consistency on the field. Not to mention that the growing competition in the defensive department has prevented him from making himself a regular member in the starting lineup.
Especially in the last couple of years, Rojo has barely featured for the Red Devils. The ex-Sporting CP defender has started only ten Premier League for the Mancunian club since the start of the 2017/18 campaign. He notably suffered an ACL injury that kept him out for almost seven months.
Rojo currently finds himself way down the pecking order at Old Trafford under Solskjaer’s tutelage. Hence, a move away from the Theatre of Dreams makes sense in the upcoming January transfer window.
Phil Jones
The second player to feature on this list is Phil Jones, who is not a good fit for Solskjaer’s style of play, given his recent struggles at Manchester United. The English centre-back is considered as a liability by the onlookers, and he is currently way behind Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire in the pecking order at the club.
Besides, Jones has suffered many injury problems over the past few years. And given his lack of consistency and error-prone nature, United should consider getting rid of him in January as they look to reshape their defensive unit.
Nemanja Matic
Nemanja Matic has suffered a massive decline over the past 15 months or so. Once considered as one of the best holding midfielders in Europe, the former Chelsea star is nothing more than a liability at the moment.
Indeed, Matic has looked very sloppy, of late, often failing to distribute possession while appearing tentative with the ball at his feet. The Serbian international has also struggled to provide security to the backline when he assumes the holding midfield role. And he is already on the wrong side of the 30s.
Moreover, Scott McTominay has shown promising signs during this campaign and is destined to replace him for the long-term. Hence, Manchester United should sell Matic in January to make way for a new central midfielder.
