Barring the game against Celtic, Rangers have had a fantastic season so far. They made it to the Europa League main draws after winning four gruelling round of qualifiers. They even went on to register a win over Feyenoord in their first game of the group table. They have also managed to make it to the semi-finals of the League Cup without much fuss. Recently they thrashed Aberdeen at home, a side which was a significant thorn in Rangers’ path last season.
One player who has been terrific so far is Steven Davis. The Northern Irish midfielder joined the Gers in January from Southampton on loan. He didn’t manage to make an impact then, but Rangers still decided to sign him permanently in the summer by offering him a one-year deal. This season, the veteran has turned back the clock and has blown everyone away with his performances at the middle of the park.
What does Davis bring to the table?
Davis brings control in midfield and is the chief orchestrator for Rangers down the centre. The midfielder was known to be a box to box player in his heydays, but the veteran might not have the legs to assume that role regularly at 34. Therefore he often sits deep in the middle and performs almost as a deep-lying playmaker. His impressive diagonals and quick-release make him a perfect base of attack.
The Northern Ireland midfielder is always willing to get on the ball, and he has controlled games for fun for Rangers down the middle. Davis is also a natural leader and was the captain of Southampton when he used to be a regular for them.
Time to offer Davis a new deal?
Hence, we think that Rangers need to provide him with a new deal as the midfielder is still going strong and there are no signs that he can’t do this job for a few more years. Moreover, his experience is a significant plus for the Glaswegian outfit after he emerged as a mainstay in the middle.
Davis also knows a thing or two about winning titles as he was part of the Rangers team that won three Premiership titles, two League Cups and one Scottish Cup during his first stint at the Ibrox. His experience will also help Gerrard mould young midfielders off the pitch. There is no doubt that he must be having a positive impact on some of the young midfielders. Hopefully, he can continue with his excellent work and deliver something tangible for Rangers this season. Gerrard should consider offering Davis an extension for another year or two.
