According to the latest reports from the Daily Record, Rangers scout Billy McLaren was present to see Lawrence Shankland in action against Greenock Morton in the Championship. The Dundee United striker didn’t disappoint as he bagged a hattrick in a 6-0 win which sees United go to the top of the table in the Scottish second tier. Along with the Bears, Celtic scouts are also keeping tabs on him.
It is not the first time that Shankland has drawn interest from the Glaswegian giants. The 24-year-old has been a prolific scorer in the Scottish third and second tier over the past few years. There is no doubt that he would earn a move to a top tier club someday. Shankland has already bagged ten goals for United this season in all competitions.
The Scottish outfit signed him on a free transfer in the summer after his contract with Ayr United had expired. Last season, the talented forward scored 34 goals for them in all competitions. Ayr ended up losing in the semi-finals of the playoffs and missed out on promotion to the top tier.
We think that Shankland might prefer a move to Rangers over Celtic as he was asked once about his favourite Stadium to which he replied, ”Ibrox when it’s full, is always some experience. Just walking out the tunnel to the noise always gives you shivers down your spine, it’s a great feeling.”
It remains to be seen whether Rangers will come up with a decent offer for him or not in the future.
Does Rangers need strikers?
Rangers have got two fit and firing forwards in Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe. However, apart from that, Gerrard is short of options in the striking department. Therefore an injury to either one of them could add more pressure on the other striker as Rangers are competing in various competitions.
The club parted ways with Kyle Lafferty this summer and they never really went on to sign a third striker. Someone like Greg Stewart might be able to fill in that role, but one would agree that the Gers can do with one more striker at the club.
What can he bring at Ibrox?
The Scotsman is known to be a lethal finisher, and he always gets in the right places to score. The 24-year-old’s pace can also trouble quite a few defenders in the Premiership. He likes to make runs between the channels and is comfortable in holding up play as well. However, the jury is still out on whether Shankland would be able to replicate his impressive form in the Scottish top tier.
