In a pre-match press conference ahead of Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon (via Goal.com), Jurgen Klopp confirmed that the Merseyside club are in negotiations with James Milner over a new contract to extend his spell at Anfield. The Reds manager was full of praise of the English veteran, whose current deal is set to run out at the end of this campaign, and said (via Goal.com), “Nobody is nervous, we are in talks constantly.
“It is really early and we have time to do things with all the players, the relationship is very trustful. We don’t hide information from them, they know always about the situation.
“He just loves what he is doing. He has gone through it all. He did it the hard way with all his clubs, Newcastle, Aston Villa and so on and then with Manchester City he was not a regular starter – he was on the bench and I am not sure if he was ever not in the squad but maybe he had that experience as well one time.”
Milner’s Incredible Career In English Football
Milner has been one of the most important members of Klopp’s squad since the German head coach took over as the Liverpool manager back in October 2015. The English midfield ace has enjoyed a brilliant spell at Merseyside thus far. He had made nine appearances for Liverpool this term, scoring one goal while grabbing two assists across all competitions.
The former Manchester City talent has also earned 61 international caps for England and has scored one goal for his country during his international career.
However, Milner is not a guaranteed starter in Klopp’s first-team at the moment which might end up frustrating him if his current situation does not change soon. He has been a great servant to Liverpool over the past few years. Hence, a short-term contract extension could work out for both the player and the club.
What Does The English Workhorse Offer On The Pitch?
Milner is versatile enough to feature in multiple positions across the field. He primarily operates as a central midfielder but can fill in on either full-back positions if required. The English veteran is not afraid to work his socks off for his side. The 33-year-old is still one of the fittest players in the Premier League and can be a useful asset for Klopp due to his ability to impact the game at both ends of the pitch.
Why The Reds Cannot Allow Milner To Leave At The End Of This Campaign
Not retaining Milner’s services beyond this season could prove to be a costly mistake for the Reds as he is still an integral part of Klopp’s plans at Anfield. The Europeans champions cannot afford to let him leave as he is a dream squad player. It will be very difficult for Klopp to find a suitable replacement who has the vast experience and incredible versatility of James Milner.
