Leeds United are never too far off with injuries, and Marcelo Bielsa has never had a fully fit squad to choose from ever since he took over at Elland Road. That trend is likely to continue as the Argentine manager recently confirmed (Leeds Live) that Spanish attacker Pablo Hernandez will be unavailable for the league match against Charlton Atheltic this weekend.
The 34-year-old is currently down with a muscle injury, and it is uncertain when he will return. The Whites are now sitting on the top of the EFL Championship table on goal difference, but they could have taken a healthy lead if they would have been more clinical going forward. Based on their performances, they should have won all their games so far, and poor finishing has already cost them a lot of points.
Hernandez’ importance in Bielsa’s setup
Now the injury to Hernandez will be a concern for the manager as the veteran is the creator in chief for the Whites. When Hernandez plays well, the Yorkshire side generally tend to do well in terms of creating chances as the Spaniard is always trying to make things happen in the final third.
He usually starts on the right flank, but Hernandez often drifts into the central areas to involve himself more in the opposition half. The 34-year-old might not have the pace anymore to run the fullbacks ragged, but he has the guile and the vision to unlock any defence, which makes him a crucial player in Bielsa’s setup. The attacker has already contributed with two goals and two assists so far this season. If Leeds were more unforgiving with their finishing, then Hernandez could have had a few more assists to his name.
Time for Costa to shine
Losing him against the Addicks will be a big blow, but this will give Helder Costa a chance to showcase his worth from the start. Leeds United’s big summer signing has only made appearances as a substitute in the Championship so far. He will get his chance now to influence the game from the beginning.
A lot of United fans have been waiting to see him start but obviously, not in place of Hernandez. If Costa can impress, then he could be shifted to the left flank in place of Jack Harrison once Hernandez becomes fit. Costa will be a bit more of a traditional winger as he has the pace and skills to beat his man in a 1v1 situation. Hopefully, the Portuguese winger will be able to grab this opportunity presented to him with both hands.
