According to Daily Mail, Leicester City have joined Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough in the race to sign Cameron John. The Wolverhampton Wanderers defender has attracted a lot of interest from a host of English clubs due to his unprecedented talent. And, a move away from the Molineux could be on the horizon.
John’s struggles at Wolverhampton
A product of the Southend United youth academy, John initially moved to Wolverhampton back in 2015. He was quickly promoted to the reserve side in 2017 due to his performances in the youth competitions. But since then, the defender has never really managed to make a mark in the senior team.
The 20-year-old is yet to make a single competitive appearance for the Wolves, despite featuring in 20 matches in the Premier League 2 last season. And this summer, he was sent out to Doncaster on a season-long loan deal.
John has fared quite well for the League One outfit so far, notably scoring one goal in four matches. His defensive contributions have helped the Rovers maintain their spot at the top end of the table.
No prospect at the Molineux
Even if John returns to Molineux on the back of a successful season with Doncaster, it’s doubtful he will have any future at Wolverhampton.
The Premier League side has largely persisted with the same three-man defensive setup of Ryan Bennett, Conor Coady and Willy Boly, under the management of Nuno Espirito Santo. The Wolves have also brought in Jesus Vallejo from Real Madrid – a loan deal which will likely be made permanent next summer.
Speaking of which, John’s current contract at the Molineux expires at the end of the season, meaning he will be available for free unless he signs a contract extension with Wolverhampton.
Leicester City: An ideal destination for John?
John could be a clever piece of investment from Leicester City’s perspective. The Foxes were left pretty open in the defensive department following the late departure of Harry Maguire to Manchester United in the summer.
Caglar Soyuncu, however, has emerged as a first-team regular for the Foxes. But, he remains the only long-term defensive option for Brendon Rodgers, with both Jonny Evans and Wes Morgan on the wrong end of the 30s. John, in that regard, could slot in just fine.
The 20-year-old will provide back-up for the two central defenders and possibly a new defensive signing next summer. And with a proper pinch of luck, the youngster could finally get an opportunity to impress at the highest level.
