Weghorst’s rapid rise in the Bundesliga
A product of the Willem youth academy, Weghorst initially moved to Wolfsburg last summer, in a €10.5 million move from AZ Alkmaar. And he never had to look back since.
Indeed, the Dutchman netted an impressive 17 goals in his debut campaign with Wolfsburg – a tally only bettered by the league’s top two strikers in Paco Alcacer and the mercurial Robert Lewandowski. His contributions in front of goal were critical in helping the Wolves attain a sixth-placed finish in the league.
Weghorst has continued his excellent goalscoring form this season as well, having already netted three goals in four matches. As a result, Wolfsburg are right up there in the top half of the table, with eight points on the board.
Why Weghorst could be an ideal fit for Aston Villa?
Aston Villa signed Wesley for a club-record fee earlier this summer. The Brazilian was known for his pace and physical attributes that were ideal, especially for a club like Villa. But, he has hardly been able to get involved in the game.
Weghorst, however, is an expressive forward – someone you can’t keep away from the game. He is primarily known for his aggression and willingness to win the ball back for his team. Additionally, the Dutchman has the physical edge that helps him hold onto the ball and ride challenges from defenders.
Weghorst also has an imposing 1.97m figure that gives him a considerable advantage in aerial duels, meaning he is a threat from indirect set-pieces – an ideal trait for any Premier League striker.
Securing his services could be a problem
Weghorst is indeed an excellent fit for Aston Villa. But, snapping him up could be a problem unless the Villans are willing to sacrifice a hefty amount of sum, probably in the region of €35-40 million. The striker still has a contract with Wolfsburg till 2023 and the Wolves, who have no real alternatives, are unlikely to part with him anytime soon.
