For the first time in quite a while, Tottenham Hotspur have stuttered under the management of Mauricio Pochettino. The north London giants don’t have a balanced unit and have suffered from a lot of injury problems throughout the past 18 months.
Therefore, Pochettino should definitely sign a few players in the upcoming January transfer window in an attempt to add more quality to his squad. And one such player is Eintracht Frankfurt star, Filip Kostic.
Kostic’s resurgence at Frankfurt
Kostic was identified as a fringe Bundesliga player after failing to impress ever since leaving VfB Stuttgart in 2016. But, that was before he joined Eintracht Frankfurt last summer in a season-long loan deal.
The ex-Groningen star quickly became a vital part of Adi Hutter’s tactical setup, thriving in the wing-back role. He appeared in 34 league matches last season, scoring six goals and providing 11 assists, which was his most productive campaign in his footballing career.
Kostic’s impressive performances at the Commerzbank Arena forced Frankfurt to sign him permanently this summer, for a fee of just €6 million. The Serbian has struggled a little due to the club’s poor start to the campaign. But, his performance against Arsenal in midweek was enough to suggest that he has not fade way.
What can he bring to the table?
Kostic is primarily a left-winger. But, he has predominantly featured as a wing-back for Eintracht Frankfurt. The 26-year-old has impressed the onlookers with his tenacity and aggression. His overall game has also matured a lot in recent years.
The ex-HSV star is now a hard-working individual, who can win the ball back for his team and can also create chances in the final third. Speaking of which, Kostic can be utilised as an out and out winger as well as an attacking midfielder – making him the ultimate utility player.
Why do Spurs need to sign Kostic?
Kostic would be a really smart investment for Tottenham Hotspur in the upcoming January transfer window. The Lilywhites have over-relied on the services of Danny Rose in recent months, especially with Ben Davies struggling to impress.
Should the Welshman continue to struggle, Kostic could offer an ideal alternative. Besides, the Serbian’s attacking qualities mean he can easily fit into Pochettino’s wing-back system as well.
Moreover, the Frankfurt winger can be an excellent backup for the likes of Lucas Moura, Erik Lamela and Dele Alli. And at the age of 26, Kostic could be an excellent long-term investment for the Lilywhites as they aim to strengthen their overall quality.
