A curler from Eden Hazard last season sunk deep into Tottenham Hotspur’s flesh, ending their hopes of acquiring English Football’s most coveted trophy which they haven’t done so in the previous 50 years. After this, they never really recovered and a stumble in form towards the finish line saw them concede the second position to their bitter London rivals Arsenal and the season ended in deep misery.
The main objective of the summer for Mauricio Pochettino and his staff was to rope in players to add to the depth and prepare themselves for the numerous competitions they’ll take part in with qualification for Champions League ensured.
That is what they did with the signings of Wanyama and Janssen for example.
The starting of the new season was a diversion, a way to put behind the past and get going and Tottenham started as title contenders. A draw against Everton on the opening day was recognized as a point gained against a tough opponent.
What is frustrating for Tottenham is that they have gotten good enough against the big teams including a massive win over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and fair results against the Merseyside rivals without getting defeated even once so far but they have dropped crucial points against Bournemouth and haven’t got the result they expected against champions Leicester in their recent game.
Except for Min Son’s good run of scoring, they have struggled to get the ball into the net and no one else has stepped up. Besides the poor form of Janssen does not help either and they need better quality to challenge for something as huge as the title.
