The new Australian A-League season is due to start in mid-October. Eleven teams will compete in the competition for the first time since the league’s foundation in 2005. Western United has been invited to play in the division as the FFA (Football Federation Australia) ramps up its plans for further development.
The Melbourne-based club starts its journey with a trip to New Zealand where they’ll face off against Wellington Phoenix. What’s more, the FFA has plans to add more teams in the future. Its main objective is to make the league more competitive and entice larger crowds to games.
As always, there’s been an abundance of transfer news and gossip. Throughout this guide, we’ll give you a full rundown of the most significant deals. If you’re betting on soccer this season, take a look at the new additions before you start.
Jets Pick Up Hoolahan
Newcastle Jets picked up Irish midfielder Wes Hoolahan on a free transfer after he was released by West Brom at the end of last season. The 37-year-old has signed a one year contract at the McDonald Jones Stadium. Hoolahan will bring plenty of experience to his new side. The Irishman represented his nation 43 times between 2008 and 2017.
The former Norwich City player creates chances and scores plenty of goals. The Jets hope that he can help them improve on their 7th place finish. He certainly has the ability to turn their fortunes around. If he hits the ground running and performs consistently, he’ll drag the Jets towards the playoffs. Watch this space.
O’Shea Trades Bury for Brisbane
Brisbane Roar head coach and former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler has brought Jay O’Shea to the Suncorp Stadium. The Irish journeyman has played for several prestigious English clubs including Sheffield United, Milton Keynes Dons, and Chesterfield. He also represented the Republic of Ireland at youth level on several occasions.
During his last season with Bury, O’Shea was named as the EFL League Two Player of the Month twice. The winger was also included as part of the PFA League Two Team of the Year. He’ll be a fantastic addition to the Brisbane Roar squad.
Wanderers Sign Majewski
Polish playmaker Radosław Majewski joined Western Sydney Wanderers on a one year deal. The former A-League and AFC Champions League winners have picked up a fantastic player. Majewski has played for several top European clubs including Nottingham Forest and Lech Poznań.
Furthermore, the midfielder was capped nine times by Poland. We’re backing him to light the A-League up with his flair.
Signings Elsewhere
There’s been a series of notable signings elsewhere. For instance, former Cardiff City player Craig Noone has joined Melbourne City from troubled League One side Bolton Wanderers. Kosta Barbarouses has also joined current champions Sydney FC from Melbourne Victory. The Kiwi is one of the most talented players in the league, and he’ll only strengthen Sydney further.
