As reported by BBC Sport, Mauricio Pochettino has claimed that Christian Eriksen is happy to remain at Tottenham Hotspur. The Danish international was linked with a move away from north London this summer, with Manchester United and Real Madrid among the clubs interested in his services. However, he ended up staying at Spurs and Pochettino’s positive comments could serve as a huge boost for the club.
In this article, we will talk about three reasons why Spurs should keep hold of Eriksen at any cost.
Experience and adaptability
What makes Eriksen such a unique player for any club is his ability to adapt. The playmaker initially arrived in the Premier League back in 2013. He was quick to make an impact as well, notably scoring seven goals and providing nine assists in his debut campaign.
Furthermore, the 27-year-old showed tremendous versatility by operating as a wide midfielder and even as a number eight whenever Spurs demanded. But, it is not only his adaptability as the Dane also has a vast amount of experience at the highest level of football that could be beneficial for Tottenham in their bid to challenge for the Premier League title.
Struggles of Lo Celso
Tottenham Hotspur signed Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis on a season-long loan deal this summer. The Argentine was brought in as the potential replacement for Eriksen. But, he has so far endured a difficult start to his Premier League campaign.
Indeed, the 23-year-old has mustered only 44 minutes of league football so far. The former Real Betis man also suffered a fresh injury during the international break that will keep him out at least until October.
From a bigger perspective, Lo Celso’s struggles indicate that it could be challenging for Tottenham to replace Eriksen.
Contract running out
Eriksen’s current deal at Tottenham expires at the end of the season. That means the Lilywhites are running the risk of losing him for free next summer or for a cut-price in the upcoming January transfer window.
It’s probably needless to say that Eriksen is one of the best playmakers in the world. And losing his services for a cut-price would be a massive blow for Spurs, especially given the fact that he could easily cost up to €100 million – money that could help them secure a replacement.
Therefore, the Premier League giants must keep hold of the Danish international, at least till next summer by offering him a contract extension.
