According to a recent report by the Daily Express, Chelsea has begun negotiations with Emerson Palmieri over a new, long term contract. The same source has mentioned that the Pensioners are eager to tie the Italy international up on a fresh long-term contract ahead of the winter transfer period.
Emerson’s Return To Form At West London
The 25-year-old has made a good start to this campaign after putting in some solid performances for Chelsea before the international break. He has been in a decent run of form for the West London outfit and is currently Frank Lampard’s first-choice for the left-back position at Stamford Bridge.
Emerson has successfully managed to keep Marcos Alonso out of the Chelsea first-team. The Santos-born talent has featured in four league matches for the Pensioners this term, making an average of 3.8 tackles, 2.5 interceptions and 1.3 clearances per game in the English top-flight (stats via whoscored).
He was also part of Lampard’s first-team and played the full 120 minutes during the UEFA Super Cup final defeat against Liverpool last month. Emerson has managed to acquire six international caps for the Italian national side but is yet to open his goal-scoring account for his nation.
What Are The Italian Full-Back’s Best Attributes?
Emerson is quick enough to be a decent outlet for his team down the left flank. He loves to link-up play with others around him in the opposition half and can pick out a killer pass in the final third. The Italian left-back is also a better defender than Marcos Alonso at the back as he can make some essential interceptions for his side.
Was It The Correct Call By Lampard To Open Contract Talks With Emerson?
There is no doubt that Lampard is making the right call by offering the former Serie A full-back a new contract so that he can extend his stay at West London. It is a deal that will benefit both the player and the club.
However, it could also signify the beginning of the end of Alonso’s spell at Stamford Bridge. Either way, Lampard would hope that Emerson can raise his game and perform at a high level when his future is resolved at the English capital.
