According to a recent report by Correio da Manhã (via Sport Witness), Manchester City are set to go head to head with their local rivals Manchester United in pursuit of Benfica defensive ace Ruben Dias. The same source has also stated that the Citizens have identified the Portuguese centre-back as an ideal replacement for Aymeric Laporte who is set to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a serious injury before the international break.
Dias’ Recent Emergence In The Liga NOS
The Amadora born prospect came through the youth ranks of Benfica before breaking out as a first-team starter back in 2017. The 22-year-old has made a total of 90 appearances for the Liga NOS giants, scoring eight goals while grabbing three assists across multiple competitions.
On the defensive end, Dias has averaged 1.0 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 3.0 clearances per game in the Portuguese top-flight this season (stats via whoscored). The Benfica centre-half has also represented Portugal at various youth levels before going on to feature in 10 matches for his nation at the senior level.
He recently helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League earlier this summer. At such a young age, Dias has successfully managed to establish himself in Benfica’s first XI, but he is yet to prove his worth at the highest level.
What Will The Portugal International Bring To The Etihad Stadium?
Dias is aggressive in the way he approaches the game and is always willing to work hard for his team. The Portuguese youngster is a substantial presence at the back who can command his own penalty box with authority and conviction. The 22-year-old can also make some vital interceptions for his side, but he needs to work on his ball-distribution if he wants to succeed at the top level.
Is Dias The Right Fit For Guardiola’s Side?
Pep Guardiola’s side is renowned for their possession-based brand of football. Therefore, Dias might not be the best fit for the Citizens. However, there is no doubt that the Benfica prospect is one of the best defenders in the top tier of Portugal. Thus, Guardiola should still consider making an offer for his services as he will add some much-needed depth to the Spaniard’s squad.
Furthermore, Dias should have enough time to settle into life in England if he makes a switch in January as Laporte is expected to be back after the turn of the year.
