According to a recent report by L’Equipe (via Sport Witness), LOSC Lille centre-half Adama Soumaoro is expected to leave when the transfer window reopens in January. The same source has also claimed that the French defensive ace is dreaming of a move to England amid interest from Everton earlier this summer.
Soumaoro’s Recent Rise In The French Top-Flight
The 27-year-old is currently the skipper of LOSC Lille but has secured only nine minutes of playing time this season. He began his career at the French club before coming through their youth ranks and breaking out as a first-team starter back in 2013.
Soumaoro has gone on to make 110 senior appearances for Lille, scoring three goals while creating one assist on all fronts so far. He was a solid presence in the Lille backline last season as he helped the club maintain the best defensive record in their division. The French outfit conceded a league-low tally of 33 goals during the 2018-19 campaign, but it was not enough for them to challenge for the league title.
However, Soumaoro has still not managed to earn an international cap for the French national side thus far which is a shame considering how well he performed for Lille last season. He could be a terrific squad player for the Toffees if they decide to bring him to Merseyside in January.
What Will The French Defender Bring To Goodison Park?
Soumaoro is a powerhouse inside his own half and is a capable presence at the back for Lille. He is aerially dominant and commands his own box with authority and conviction. However, the Frenchman is very slow and fails to keep up with the opposition when he is up against them in a 1v1 foot race.
Marco Silva currently has Yerry Mina, Michael Keane and Mason Holgate as the only three senior centre-backs in his squad. Thus, the Merseyside outfit are in dire need of recruiting a fresh face in defence during the winter transfer period. Everton are in with a chance to break into the Premier League’s Top 6 this season.
Should Silva Orchestrate A Move For Soumaoro In January?
However, Silva would need more reinforcements if his side are to keep pace with Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal in the second half of this campaign. Therefore, the Toffees should try everything they can to lure the French defender to Merseyside in January as he will add some much-needed depth to the Toffees backline.
