Celtic still look like the team to beat in the domestic front as they went past heavy favourites Rangers in the latest Old Firm derby before the international break. The Hoops had a fruitful last few days of the transfer window as they brought in ample cover for the season.
Sinclair’s situation at Celtic
However, amid all this, Scott Sinclair has been caught in a bit of a limbo. The winger was being linked with a move away when the English transfer window was open. Even after that shutdown, the former Aston Villa winger drew interest from League One outfit Sunderland. However, the Englishman is still a Celtic player, and things don’t look great for him.
Sinclair was a regular under Brendan Rodgers last season, but ever since Lennon has taken over, the 30-year-old has fallen down the pecking order. The winger last made an appearance from the bench against Motherwell this season, and since then, he has struggled to get a place in the matchday squads as well.
The 2018-19 campaign was a fruitful season for him in front of goal as he managed 17 goals in all competitions. However, so far this season even Lewis Morgan has started ahead of him in the first team. With the arrival of Mohamed Elyounoussi, Sinclair’s future looks further dim at the club.
The winger was in the final few months of his contract not too long ago, but the Bhoys had an option to trigger a year-long extension which they did. If the winger wasn’t going to be in Lennon plans, then the Englishman should have been sold in this window.
Moreover, Sinclair is one of the highest earners at Parkhead, so keeping him on high wages and not involving him in the first team doesn’t make much sense. We think that he is still better and much more useful than Morgan on the flanks.
It’s clear that Lennon doesn’t fancy Sinclair much, and it’s not just based on footballing abilities that the 30-year-old has been left out of the first team this season. It seems likely that he will not be involved much for this season and Celtic might try to ship him away in January.
What should Lennon do?
That will be their last chance to sell him for any kind of fees, and buying clubs are unlikely to come up with a great offer as they would be aware that the Englishman will become a free agent in a few months. This is certainly not an ideal situation for Lennon and Celtic. The gaffer should probably look to make amends and induct the player in the first team so that he can contribute until January before deciding upon his future.
