According to The Sun, Fulham fear Tottenham Hotspur are still in the race to sign Steven Sessegnon. The Lilywhites had initially tabled a £3m offer in part of the deal to sign his twin brother Ryan Sessegnon this summer. Though Ryan moved to north-London, Fulham rejected Spurs’ proposal to sign his brother. That being said, the Championship outfit believes that the Champions League finalists may return in their pursuit of Steven soon.
Steven Sessegnon’s spell at Fulham
Much like his brother, Steven is a product of the Fulham youth academy. The youngster was initially a part of the under-16 squad back in 2016. But, a string of impressive performances saw him get promoted to the reserve side the following year. And finally, this summer, the right-back became a part of the senior team following the departure of Ryan.
Steven has already become a key part of the Fulham backline, notably making four Championship appearances this season. He has become the club’s first-choice right-back, ahead of Denis Odoi and Cyrus Christie. New manager Scott Parker’s added focus on the development of the young players looks to have benefitted Sessegnon.
But, at the same time, it has garnered attention from Tottenham Hotspur, who are now keeping close tabs on the 19-year-old this season. Sessegnon’s current contract at Fulham expires in 2022.
What can he bring to the table?
Steven, much like his twin brother, is generally known for his versatility. He is a right-back by trade. But, he can also feature as a centre-back as well as the left-back. When playing in a central defensive role, the youngster likes to operate as the ball-playing defender. His excellent composure on the ball gives him a huge bonus, in that regard.
At right-back, the 19-year-old usually stays deep. His disciplined nature allows him to keep up with tricky opponents. Besides, he’s also quick – making him a well-rounded defender.
Does Tottenham need Steven Sessegnon?
Steven Sessegnon could be a sensible signing for Tottenham Hotspur for multiple reasons. Firstly, Spurs lack the services of a reliable right-back following the departure of Kieran Trippier. Kyle Walker-Peters has become the first-choice right-back since then. But, the youngster sustained an injury recently while Mauricio Pochettino does not rate Serge Aurier too highly.
Sessegnon, to that extent, could provide additional cover and will increase competition in the right-back department. But most importantly, he could allow Pochettino to utilise his brother Ryan Sessegnon in a more attacking role. Therefore, the north London giants should go after this talented defender in the upcoming January transfer window.
