According to reports from Germany as cited by the Mirror, Manchester City were one of the clubs interested in signing Kai Havertz from Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The German also emerged as a target for Bayern Munich who were linked with him heavily in the last few days of the transfer window, but Havertz stayed put with Leverkusen.
The midfielder recently insisted that he is happy to stay at the club for another year, but he also kept the door open for a future move. Havertz was quoted as saying, ”They haven’t scared me off (transfer rumours). It just didn’t happen for me this year. I think there were a number of reasons why. But I’m happy to be here and stay in Leverkusen for another year. We’ll see what will happen next summer.”
It’s clear that the 20-year-old is keeping the door open for a move in the next summer. The midfielder made his debut for Leverkusen in 2016, and slowly emerged as an integral member of the first team. The 20-year-old managed 20 goals and seven assists last season which caught the eye of plenty of clubs including Manchester City.
Havertz has started the new season brightly as he has already scored twice for Peter Bosz’s side this season. His impressive form has even earned him a callup to Germany’s national team where he is being seen as the next big thing to emerge from the Bundesliga.
What can Havertz offer?
The German starlet is known for his decent pace and ability to carry the ball. He shows quick feet and impressive dribbling skills in tight areas, which helps him to evade challenges in the middle of the pitch. However, most importantly, the youngster can deliver goals and assists in the final third, which shows that he has the composure to pick the right option in attack.
We think that he could be one to watch out for in the next few seasons. There is still room for improvement to his game as he is just 20.
Should City go after him?
City are set to part ways with David Silva after this season, and they would need a long term successor for the Spanish playmaker. Given Havertz’s impressive start to his career, he is going to be one of the candidates to replace him if City decides to spend big to get an alternative for Silva.
The English champions have got impressive playmakers in the form of Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne. Phil Foden is being built as a natural heir to Silva. However, if the Citizens want to spend top money, then they can consider getting someone like Havertz.
