Bringing in new fullbacks has been a big dilemma for Celtic for quite some time now. The departure of Kieran Tierney also didn’t help their cause. But now that the transfer window has closed, the Hoops have got the numbers in almost every position.
The Glaswegian giants signed Boli Bolingoli Mbombo at left-back who has got a few first-teams starts at Celtic Park this season. The former Rapid Wien defender has struggled defensively, but he did an excellent job in the Old Firm derby. However, Rangers never really tested him as they didn’t play with an outright winger from the beginning of the match.
Bolingoli was especially exposed in the tie against CFR Cluj in the Champions League qualifiers. After a poor first leg performance, Lennon decided to play Callum McGregor at left-back, and that move backfired as Celtic crashed out of the Champions League.
Taylor shares his delight on joining Celtic
Greg Taylor can be termed as another vital acquisition, and he will fight for a place with Bolingoli at left-back. The Hoops would be happy that they got the deal over the line after it seemed like it was stalling.
The player was seemingly desperate to join the Hoops as he said, ”As soon as I knew of Celtic’s interest, I was desperate to come, so it’s been a great day, certainly now that it’s done. It’s a massive club, everyone knows that, and I’m here to win trophies, it’s as simple as that and I can’t wait to hopefully be a part of it.”
Given Taylor’ form for Kilmarnock last season coupled with the fact that he has been called up by Scotland again for international duty, all signs point towards Taylor making a strong claim for the left-back spot.
Who could be the first choice left-back at Celtic Park?
Bolingoli is likely to have an edge initially as he has been with the club for weeks now and should feel settled with life in Glasgow. So after the international break, we are expecting the 23-year-old to continue at left-back especially after his encouraging performance against Rangers.
However, Taylor might be slotted in once he gets used to Celtic’s playing style. Moreover, Lennon might decide to use him against Rennes in the Europa League tie which will take place on September 19th. Taylor has looked defensively strong in the last few seasons with Kilmarnock, and he might be prefered over Bolingoli against sides where Celtic will be tested defensively. We are expecting Taylor to become the first choice as the season progresses. Bolingoli might get games against teams where Celtic will dominate the proceedings.
