The European transfer window ended recently, and Leed United were able to ship quite a few fringe players away on loan. The Whites have had a mixed bag of a transfer window as they lost the services of crucial players like Kemar Roofe and Pontus Jansson. They have brought in talented players like Eddie Nketiah and Ben White, but both of them are only on loan.
The Financial Fair Play ruling was an issue for the club, but they should be in the green now after the sale of Jack Clarke, Jansson, Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Aapo Halme and Kemar Roofe. The Whites could have probably invested more money into the squad to add more firepower. In fact, they even tried to as they had reportedly made a bid of £4.5m for Liverpool’s Ryan Kent. Latest reports from Liverpool Echo confirms those figures and indicates that United’s interest was genuine for the English winger and they had made a bid for him.
However, Liverpool declined the Whites’ approach, and they managed to get £7m for their man on the final day of the transfer window from Rangers. Therefore the Reds were justified in rejecting Leeds’ earlier offer as they managed to make £2.5m more on him by the end of the window.
Was it justifiable for Leeds United to lose out on Kent for £2.5m?
The English transfer window closed down early, and that has turned out to be a disadvantage for the English clubs. Various rumours did the round that Liverpool could demand somewhere around £12m for Kent, but in the end, they settled for £7m as that was the best offer they were going to get.
Maybe it could have been that the Whites were quoted more than £7m by Liverpool at that time of the transfer window. If it really were £7m, then we think that Marcelo Bielsa and the club should have gone ahead with the signing by paying the £2.5m more.
We have seen Jack Harrison struggling to find the final product yet again from the left flank and United could have done with one more option for that position. Jack Clarke seems to be out of contention from a place in the first eleven at the moment as he is yet to play a single minute in the Championship. Last season, United’s inability to finish off moves or find the right delivery in the final third cost them promotion.
Even this season against Swansea they dropped points recently because they were unable to take their chances and also the draw against Nottingham Forest was because of the same reason. Kent would have been a worthy alternative to Harrison on the left flank who performed brilliantly for Rangers last season. However, only time will tell whether this move would backfire or not.
