According to Nieuwsblad, Club Brugge boss, Philippe Clement has urged Victor Wanyama to join the Belgian outfit this summer. It is believed that Brugge have already agreed a €10 million transfer fee with Tottenham Hotspur, with an additional €5 million in bonuses. And now they only need to convince the midfielder to leave England in search of a new challenge in Belgium as the transfer window draws near to a close.
Wanyama has struggled to make an impact
Although pretty obvious, the main reason why Tottenham Hotspur should get rid of Wanyama is because of his failure to make an impact at the club. After arriving in north London in 2016, the Kenyan international has only made 93 competitive appearances for Spurs, a majority of which came in his debut campaign.
In fact, the midfielder has mustered just over 1,000 minutes of league football within the past couple of seasons. And this is mainly due to a cartilage damage he suffered in 2017, followed by a knee injury last year. As a result, Mauricio Pochettino has barely been able to utilise the services of Wanyama, forcing him to rely on the services of younger players.
Financial boost for Spurs
Selling Wanyama for €10 million-plus €5 million in bonuses will help Tottenham Hotspur recoup the money they had initially spent on the midfielder. Indeed, the 28-year-old arrived from Southampton for a fee of €14.4 million back in 2016.
And given how much he has struggled with lack of fitness in recent years, getting rid of Wanyama for €10 million upfront is an excellent piece of business from Tottenham’s perspective. It would also help them restore the financial balance after the Lilywhites spent €114 million in the transfer market this summer.
Paving the way for the youngsters
Harry Winks has already become a key component of the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder this year. The 23-year-old was involved in 26 matches last season, mustering over 1,500 minutes of league football. Wanyama’s departure in that regard will reduce the competition in midfield, allowing Winks to play a more prominent role in the first team.
The Kenyan international’s potential departure could also prove to be beneficial for the young Oliver Skipp. With Eric Dier yet to play in a single Premier League game this season, the 18-year-old may become the club’s number one holding midfielder, especially if Wanyama leaves the club this summer.
