Tottenham Hotspur did some smart business in the transfer window and one of their signings Tanguy Ndombele has hit the ground running straight away. However, they are still in a dicey situation regarding the future of their playmaker Christian Eriksen. The Danish international has been linked with Real Madrid in the last month or so but he remains a Tottenham player.
Latest reports from the Sun points out that Spurs are still no closer towards getting him on a new deal. Reports from ESPN, as cited by the Sun suggests that Eriksen will only be willing to leave for Real Madrid, Barcelona or Juventus. The Danish international is still said to be keen on a move, and the midfielder believes that he could still manufacture a move to one of the mentioned three clubs.
It’s clear that Eriksen is looking for an upgrade from Spurs, but given Tottenham’s rise in the last few years, there are just handful of clubs which could be considered as a significant step up. Teams outside of England can still sign the playmaker, and that isn’t the best of the situation as even Pochettino admitted that the new rules keep the English clubs at a disadvantage.
Eriksen has already made an impact for Spurs this season as he came off the bench against Villa to change the tide when last season’s Champions League runners up were trailing by one goal. His passing range, shooting ability from distance and ability to find himself in space makes him a top player. In the first game itself, the Dane showcased that he is still a vital player for Pochettino.
Why Might Spurs be open to sending him away?
Ideally, Spurs would love to keep hold of him for another year, but they run the risk of losing him for free in the future as Eriksen seems reluctant to commit his future. Spurs have already gone in the market and signed Giovani Lo Celso who has the potential to be Eriksen’s replacement once he settles in.
So we think that Spurs would be willing to ship him away if they get the right price from any of the three big clubs mentioned above.
How can Pochettino get Eriksen to stay beyond this season?
Latest reports from the Express conveys that Real Madrid have given up on signing Eriksen and they might look somewhere else. So that could turn out to be a piece of good news for the club, and there is a good chance that he might still be a Tottenham player after second September. However, we think that the only way Pochettino can now keep the midfielder beyond his contract is by delivering a major title this season which might push him to sign on a new deal.
