According to SDNA, Konstantinos Mavropanos’ proposed move to AEK Athens was called off because of injury. It is reported that the Greek defender was due to return to his homeland, with Athens and Panathinaikos reportedly interested. However, it’s unlikely he will leave Arsenal during the ongoing transfer window due to a groin injury that will keep him out for two months.
Mavropanos’ spell at Arsenal so far
Mavropanos initially joined Arsenal at the start of last year, after making an impression at PAS Giannina. He arrived in north London for a fee of €2.1 million. But, he hasn’t exactly enjoyed a pleasant spell in England, making only seven first-team appearances for the Gunners.
Three of those games came during the 2017/18 season, with the rest of the four coming from the following campaign. Injuries have played a key role in minimising Mavropanos’ game-time at Arsenal. In fact, a groin strain that he suffered in September of last year, kept him out for almost four months.
The Greek is yet to make a senior appearance this season and the fact that the groin problem will keep him out for two months further reduces his chances of making it into the starting lineup regularly.
How could Mavropanos benefit the Arsenal defence?
A fit Mavropanos brings fear in the face of the opposition attackers, thanks to his massive 1.94m frame. It also hands him a considerable advantage when it comes to headed duels. But most importantly, the 21-year-old is physically imposing that makes him an intimidating presence in the defensive half.
In many ways, the young defender can be compared to his compatriot Sokratis because of his no-nonsense style of defending, which becomes quite useful when employing a deep defensive block.
Should Arsenal get rid of Mavropanos?
Arsenal have enjoyed an eventful transfer window, bringing in a host of star players, including Dani Ceballos and Nicolas Pepe. They have signed two central defenders in David Luiz and William Saliba. But, the latter has been loaned out to St. Etienne for another campaign.
That leaves Unai Emery with very few defensive options, which has forced the Spaniard to bank on Calum Chambers in the very first game. Although the ex-Southampton man didn’t feature in the next game, it’s needless to say that Arsenal should keep hold of as many defensive options as they possibly can.
Hence, Mavropanos’ failed move to AEK could serve as a real blessing for the north London giants. But Emery must allow him to showcase his talents once he returns from injury.
