According to A Bola, as cited by The Statesman, Real Madrid have reignited their interest in Bruno Fernandes. The Sporting CP midfielder was linked with a move to Santiago Bernabeu earlier this summer. And now the Spanish giants are keen on securing his services, after seemingly failing in their pursuit of Christian Eriksen and Paul Pogba.
Fernandes is no doubt one of the most exciting midfielders in Europe right now following an incredible 2018/19 campaign. But, how can he be implemented into this new-look Real Madrid attack?
A potential change of formation?
Fernandes is predominantly a central attacking midfielder. That means Zinedine Zidane may have to switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation to accomodate the Portuguese international into his starting lineup. He could operate as the lone number ten, with the likes of Eden Hazard, Vinicius Junior and Marco Asensio starting in wider attacking roles.
Alternatively, Fernandes could be deployed in the extra midfield slot of Zidane’s signature 4-3-3 setup. He will be partnered by Toni Kroos and Casemiro in midfield, both of whom will operate in a relatively deeper role, especially Casemiro. However, it could take a massive toll on Luka Modric’s chances of maintaining his status as the first-team player for Real Madrid this season.
Joining the first line of the press?
The presence of Fernandes will allow Zidane to employ a tactical step that could make Real Madrid much more flexible. This is mainly because of the versatility the 24-year-old brings to the table. He can, aside from his preferred number ten role, operate as an auxiliary centre-forward.
That means the Portuguese international can partner either Luka Jovic or Karim Benzema in the attack, almost making it a 4-4-2. The offensive duo could operate as the first line of defence, putting pressure on the ball-carrying defenders and using their cover shadows to block passing lanes.
This could be extremely useful, especially when facing a quality opposition like Barcelona or any other top European club who like to play possession-based football.
A better fit than Isco?
Fernandes is arguably a better fit than Isco. Although the 24-year-old may not be as gifted with the ball at his feet, his versatility could be extremely handy for Real Madrid.
Most importantly, Fernandes is capable of creating opportunities from set-pieces. And in addition, he can score from dead balls while he is also a threat from long-range – making him an excellent transfer target for Los Merengues.
As for Isco, he usually likes to operate in the middle and looks uncomfortable while featuring as a winger. Therefore, the Spaniard might struggle to cope with the increased competition in the Real Madrid attack this season.
