According to Mundo Deportivo, Real Madrid have set their sights on Marc Roca after failing in their pursuit of Paul Pogba and Christian Eriksen. The Espanyol midfielder has been identified as the ideal alternative for the Premier League duo as Los Blancos look to further strengthen their squad this summer. The Spaniard reportedly has a release clause of €40 million.
Roca’s rise to prominence
A product of the Espanyol youth academy, Roca has been a part of the senior side since 2016. He made his breakthrough in professional football during the 2016/17 campaign. And since then, the holding midfielder has become an ever-present figure of the Catalan club’s first-team, making 79 competitive appearances.
Last season, Roca was one of Espanyol’s most prominent players, mustering over 3,000 minutes of league football. His performances in the middle of the park were critical as Los Periquitos achieved a seventh-place finish in the league.
Roca also played a crucial role in the last three matches for Spain in their European Under-21 championships earlier this summer as La Roja beat Germany to win the coveted the tournament.
What can he bring to the table?
Roca is primarily known for his versatility in the middle of the park. Though predominantly a holding midfielder, the Spaniard can operate as a number eight. He is also blessed with immense technical qualities, which is coupled with his quick-feet that allows him to nestle through tight spaces.
The 22-year-old can drop back and facilitate his side’s build-up play, thanks to his excellent passing range. He notably attained a pass completion rate of 86% last season. But, what makes him such an appealing target for Real Madrid is his ability to thread accurate through balls in behind the defence.
Should Real Madrid make a move for Roca?
Roca seems like an exciting option for Real Madrid for multiple reasons. His versatility will help provide cover for Casemiro, who is currently the only holding midfielder in the team following the departure of Marcos Llorente. As for his technical qualities, it could help him initiate counter-attacks, especially with the likes of Eden Hazard, Gareth Bale and Vinicius Junior eager to get in behind the defence.
But most importantly, Roca is a remarkable ball-carrier who should be useful in Real Madrid’s transition play. And at the age of just 22, the Spaniard could be a smart long-time investment for the Spanish giants as they look to return to their former glory under Zidane this season.
