Leeds United had a bit of an indifferent transfer window as they signed some top options, but they also allowed some of their best players to leave this summer. Squad depth was one of the significant issues for them last season and even after new signings this season, we don’t think that the Whites have really managed to add depth in their squad this summer.
It’s clear that Bielsa wants to have a small group of tight-knit players, but as the season wears by, he will probably need to bring in options. Last season the club wanted to sign Daniel James from Swansea City, but the move collapsed. Instead, the Welshman earned a move to Manchester United this summer. So that showcased that the club might need new options in January.
Hay On the possibility of signing Kent in winter
However, Phil Hay of the Athletic recently ruled out a move for Liverpool’s winger Ryan Kent in January as he reported that the Whites might not have the cash to sign him. United were heavily linked with the Liverpool man as he would have fitted in Bielsa’s system well given his direct playing style and impressive work rate.
It is slightly surprising to know that the club doesn’t have the cash to sign him. Reports mention that Kent is being priced at £8m by Liverpool.
Why should United look to spend in January?
United will have to spend heavily to get Helder Costa next season as he will cost £15m. But they balanced the book by agreeing a deal of £10m for Jack Clarke, £2.5m for Bailey Peacock-Farrell, £7m for Roofe and £5.5m for Pontus Jansson. Financial Fair Play rulings were looming large over United’s head, but they should be safe now given all the exits that took place this summer.
Eddie Nketiah and Ben White have only been signed on loan. Given Nketiah’s talent; we don’t see Arsenal selling him just yet as he will be given a go in their first team at some point. Therefore going after the permanent signing of Kent would make a lot of sense. Last season, he was Rangers’ young player of the season, and he proved his versatility by playing in a central role along with the regular left-wing spot.
Reports came out that United were willing to spend £5m (The Sun on Sunday (11/8; page 59) for Kent this summer but Liverpool were sticking to their price tag. We think that £8m is a reasonable fee, and signing him in January could make the difference in the promotion. Last season, the failure to sign Daniel James cost them dearly, and United should look to strengthen in January if the opportunity arises to sign Kent
