Leeds United travelled to the DW Stadium to take on Wigan Athletic. The Whites registered a 2-0 victory to continue their unbeaten run to the season so far. Patrick Bamford scored in both the halves to seal the game.
Wigan went down to ten men in the 21st minute as Joe Williams took out Patrick Bamford with a high challenge. The English forward then opened the scoring in the 34th minute as he scored from one yard as Adam Forshaw’s header hit the post and the ball fell kindly to the striker.
The Yorkshire side dominated the proceedings in the second half as Wigan were pinned in their own half. The Whites should have had a penalty, but they soon doubled their lead through Bamford from a corner. Casilla saved a good free-kick attempt from Morsey and United were able to see the game out in the end which resulted in three points.
Here is how Bielsa’s men fared.
Kiko Casilla 6.5
Made a few saves which one would expect him to make. Was a spectator for most parts and stayed on his line.
Ben White 6.5
Kieffer Moore’s physicality slightly troubled him on occasions. United dominated the game so wasn’t tested much. Improved as the game went on.
Liam Cooper 7.5
Marshalled his troops well and was dominant in his display. Won plenty of aerial duels with ease.
Stuart Dallas 7
Took some great positions out on the right and provided a lot of attacking outlet. Making a claim to be the first choice right back.
Barry Douglas 6.5
Lots of United’s build-up came from the left and Douglas was always in the thick of things. Was wasteful on occasions but delivered some delightful crosses as well.
Kalvin Phillips 7
Worked hard and put in a significant shift in the middle. Moved the ball well and never allowed Wigan enough time to build up as he closed them down quickly.
Mateusz Klich 6.5
Played a big part in United’s first goal. Nothing spectacular but put in a steady performance.
Adam Forshaw 7.5
Should have scored the first goal as he had a great chance, but luckily it fell to Bamford on a rebound. Was energetic and drove the ball forward with intensity. Linked up play well and allowed the Whites to dominate the game.
Pablo Hernandez 7
Was a trickster whenever he got on the ball. Could have scored but was denied by a brilliant save. Took a few tame efforts on goal when he could have done better.
Jack Harrison 6
Showed great tenacity and doggedness down the left. Linked up play well but could be better with his end product. Might just patent the previous sentence for most of his performances.
Patrick Bamford 8
Got a brace but both the finishes were easy. However, goals always help a striker’s confidence. Was smart with his movement and positioning and made some excellent runs between the channels.
