Rangers made wholesale changes to their squad since Steven Gerrard took the top job. Last summer, the Gers brought in as many as 14 players and this summer again, they have been shrewd with their business. Recently Rangers wrapped up their 10th signing of this summer as they brought in Leicester City’s Andy King on loan.
McAllister on future business
However, Rangers’ assistant manager Gary McAllister recently revealed that might not be the end of it, and they could still look to bolster their squad in other areas. Gerrard’s right-hand man recently revealed (The Expres), ”If somebody becomes available who can come and make a difference here then yes, that’s still available to us (further new transfers). If you look at the squad, we have plenty of cover. Unless someone really jumps out at us. But that doesn’t mean to say if someone becomes available, we are not interested. ”
Gerrard might have brought in 10 players this summer already, but they haven’t spent over the top as most of the players have joined on loan or free transfers.
The club has reportedly spent just £4.2m out of which £3.5m was used for acquiring Filip Helander. Therefore one can say that Rangers have gone about their business smartly and that is probably the reason why they could still bring someone else.
McAllister though made it clear that ‘someone’ would really need to jump out for Rangers to go through with a new transfer. The Gers should also think about shipping away some players as the squad looks bloated at the moment.
Rangers are just two games away from securing a place in the Europa League and on the domestic front, Gerrard’s men would be expected to compete in all competitions. So it is understandable of the manager to keep ample depth and competition for places in the squad.
Where can the club still strengthen?
There are not many areas where the club can improve, but maybe a standout left-back option and a young third striker could do the trick. Borna Barisic has been underwhelming, and a lot was expected from him as he is a Croatian international. However, he has struggled to cope with the physicality of the Premiership on occasions.
As for a striker, the Bears recently parted ways with Kyle Lafferty, and that leaves them with just two forward options in the form of Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe. So one might expect the club to add an option there as well. But it is only likely to happen if someone stands out.
