According to a recent report by Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are open to the possibility of cashing in on their South American forward Alexis Sanchez this summer. In a recent interview ahead of the Red Devils’ league encounter against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Solskjaer revealed that the Chilean wanted to be a part of his squad and said (via Manchester Evening News), “Alexis is such a professional and he comes in working every single day really hard.
“And he wants to be a part of this and it’s these stories he’s again that he’s been put in the reserves, of course he hasn’t. He’s a part of our squad and a very, very good player.
“He’s had three weeks now, he’s a few weeks behind the rest but he’s close to being part of it. We don’t have the biggest forward line in numbers, so Alexis might end up playing a lot more games than you expect, because we expect him to come good at this club, he’s quality.
“We’ve had a behind closed doors game, and he’s training, he’s doing a little bit of extras, he’ll be gradually integrated into more and more playing time, but we’ll have more behind closed doors games. With one game a week now, it’s hard to keep players ticking, so we’re arranging a few of them.”
Sanchez’s Disastrous Spell With Man United So Far
Since joining the Red Devils in the January transfer window of 2018, Sanchez has endured an injury-ravaged spell at the Theatre of Dreams. He has started in just 13 matches for Man United last season and made a total of 27 appearances, scoring two goals while creating four assists on all fronts.
However, the fact remains that the Chilean has not played for the full 90 minutes since the opening fixture of last season against Leicester City. Thus, it makes sense for Solskjaer to sell him before the European transfer market shuts down on September 2nd.
Even though Sanchez’s £400,000-a-week wages seem to be a huge stumbling block at the moment, Man United are better off parting ways with him even if it means terminating his contract by coming to a mutual agreement with the player.
Should Solskjaer Retain The Chilean’s Services Beyond This Summer?
The 30-year-old is way past his prime and has a poor track-record with injuries. He looked like a shadow of his former self when he lined up for the Mancunian outfit in the previous campaign. It seems increasingly unlikely that the Chilean talent would be able to resurrect his career in England. Sanchez has struggled to cope with the physical toll of Premier League football over the past couple of years.
Therefore, it makes sense for Man United to move him on in search of greener pastures. On the other hand, it is no wonder that the South American sensation is happy staying at Old Trafford for the time being as he is on high wages and might get a chance to prove his worth once again in the English top-flight this season. Sanchez will either sink or swim for the Red Devils in this campaign after he makes his full return from his latest injury setback.
