Rangers have been wanting Ryan Kent all summer, but Liverpool have most likely decided to keep him at Anfield. A move like that isn’t going to be popular with Rangers, and as a matter of fact, former Scotland defender and Liverpool ambassador Gary Gillespie also believes (Daily Record) that keeping Kent for the u-23 side doesn’t make sense.
Ex Liverpool player on Kent saga
Moreover, the Reds have a similar player in the form of Harry Wilson who they allowed to leave on loan. Gillespie recently said, “It’s a little bit of a shame for him because he’s probably not good enough to get into Liverpool’s first team, but they want money for him as opposed to letting him go out on loan.”
”I’m not sure who gains from him playing in the Under-23s – certainly not Ryan, Liverpool or Rangers. Liverpool will probably have to sit down with Ryan and his representatives sooner rather than later and see where the opportunities lie. Liverpool might reconsider their position now that the English transfer window has closed and they haven’t sold him because it’s way better than playing in the Under-23s.”
Gillespie is not a reporter or journalist, but there is an indication from him that the Merseyside club might reconsider their stance after the English transfer window passed by. Reports mention that Leeds United were only willing to pay £5m for Kent whereas Liverpool were holding out for the price tag of £10m after his impressive season with Rangers which saw him win their ‘young player of the season’ award.
Gillespie is also spot on with his assessment as neither of the parties will gain anything from holding on to Kent. The Liverpool winger wasn’t involved in the matchday squad against Norwich City, and it is unlikely that he will get any significant opportunities in the first team.
Gerrard has already claimed that he is willing to wait until the final second of the window to sign Kent, so it’s all up to Liverpool now to decide the youngster’s future. Surely another year at Rangers wouldn’t hurt anyone, and maybe Kent might be able to increase his price tag further by putting up another strong year at Ibrox.
Maybe the Reds believe that somewhere along the line they will need Kent. The winger though has deleted all Liverpool related content from his social media account and has posted some cryptic messages which indicate that he isn’t too happy at Liverpool. Hopefully, the Reds will see some sense by sending him on another loan spell by September second.
